2914.----- [RUHRCHEMIE A. G.]  [Highly Ignitible Fuel and Process for Producing It.]  German Patent Appl. --, R 616, filed May 28, 1942.  FIAT Reel K-30, frames 8,098-8,101; PB 73,587.

Highly ignitable fuel with cetane number >100 consists of higher alkylnitrates  alone or admixed with up to 80% of hydrocarbons wholly or partly b. < 200° if desired < 100°.  To produce this fuel, alcoholic hydrocarbon mixtures are converted into hydrocarbon mixtures containing alkyinitrates by treatment with nitrating acids.  oxygenated primary products of the catalytic hydrogenation of CO may also be nitrated after previous addition of H 2 .  Also the alcoholic hydrocarbon mixtures obtained by the reaction between water gas and olefins and subsequent hydrogenation are nitrated.  Example:  An alcoholic heavy oil, produced from an olefinic fraction b. 150°-340°, which had reacted with water gas and was subsequently hydrogenated. had an OH number of 138.  900gm. of this heavy oil were stirred into 3,600 gm. of nitrating acid (40% HNO3 and 60% H2SO4).  The reaction temperature was maintained at --5° by means of dry ice.  After addition of the heavy oil was completed, the mixture was allowed to stand for 30 minutes at 10°.  The nitrated mixture was then treated in the usual manner with H2O and a solution of bicarbonate whereby 975 gm of nitrated product was obtained whose OH number was 0 and the neutralization number 0.5. while the solidifying point was established at--16°.  The product showed a calculated cetane number of 460.
