2784. -----[ROBERTS, G., JR.] (M.W. Kellogg Co) Catalyst Adapted for Use in the Synthesis of Hydrocarbons From Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen.United States Patent 2,244,573, June 3, 1941; appl. filed July 18, 1938,Serial No.219,931; 4 claims (Cl. 252-253).Chem. Abs., vol. 35, 1941, p. 5660

Method of preparing a co-on-kieselguhr catalyst associated with a Th oxide promoter involves forming a solution of Co nitrate from HNO3 and Co, simultaneously forming Th hydroxide by the reaction or Th sulfate with NH3 treating Th hydroxide and HNO3 to form Th nitrate with kieselguhr, precipitating Co carbonate and Th carbonate from the agitated mixture upon the kieselguhr, forming a corresponding amount of KNO3 by addition of K2CO3 separating the kieselguhr and Co and Th carbonates precipitated thereon, passing the KNO3 solution to a HNO2-recovery operation, returning the HNO3 to the process, drying the kieselguhr-Co carbonate-Th carbonate precipitate, heating it to decompose the Th and Co carbonates to form oxides, and subjecting the mixture of oxides on the kieselguhr to reduction to reduce the Co but not the Th.Describes arrangement of apparatus.
