In the catalytic production of MeOH from CO and H₂ at high temperature and pressure, unsaturated hydrocarbons such as C₂H₄, C₂H₂, C₆H₆, or toluene are used with the reaction gases and liquid hydrocarbons are formed along with MeOH. The condensed product separates into 2 layers: an upper fluorescent layer containing hydrocarbons and a lower MeOH layer. The hydrocarbon product is suitable for use as a fuel for internal-combustion engines.
