Mixture of steam and hydrocarbon gas comprising chiefly C₃H₈ and C₄H₁₀ is introduced into a highly heated fuel bed to produce a gas comprising essentially H₂ and CO in the ratio of 2:1 to 3:1, respectively, and the resulting gas is enriched by at least partly reforming hydrocarbon material of normally liquid character in a chamber containing refractory material. Describes apparatus.
