Mixture of steam and hydrocarbon gas comprising chiefly C3H8 and C4H10 is introduced into a highly heated fuel bed to produce a gas comprising essentially H2 and CO in the ratio of 2:1 to 3:1, respectively, and the resulting gas is enriched by at least partly reforming hydrocarbon material of normally liquid character in a chamber containing refractory material. Describes apparatus.
