Alcohols higher than MeOH are prepared from mixtures of CO and H2 using alkali salts of fatty acids on porous supports as catalysts, such as HCOOK or AcOK. MeOH may be added to the CO and H2, or a catalyst favoring the production of MeOH from CO and H2 may be added to the other catalyst.
