2209. MCKEEVER, C. H., AND AGNEW, G. H. (Rohm & Haas Co.). Ester Alcohols. United States Patent 2,533,276, Dec. 12, 1950. Chem. Abs., vol. 45, 1951, p. 3415.

CO, H2 a monounsaturated aliphatic ester, MeOH or EtOH, and a Co catalyst, at 1,000-4,000 lb. and 80° -200° , gave the ester acetal. Thus, a 500 cc. autoclave, charged with CH2: CHCO2Et 173, MeOH 144, C6H6 50, and a 30% solution of Co bis (2-ethylhexanoate) in C6H6 15 cc., was heated to 100° , charged to 3,000 lb. with an equimolecular mixture of H2 and CO, kept 1 hr. at 100° (slightly vented to obtain agitation), cooled, and the contents distilled to give 70% (MeO)2CHCH2CH2CO2Et, b27 100° -105° (92-93% pure); the impurity was OCHCH2CH2CO2Et. CH2: CMeCO2Me similarly gave 60-65% (MeO)2CHCH2CHMeCO2Me, and Me oleate gave 40% of a mixture of Me o- and i-(dimethoxymethyl) stearates.
