Hydrocarbons and oxygenated derivatives are produced from CO and H2 by a fluidized catalyst consisting of powdered Fe of particle size 0-20 μ, together with a diluent in the form of SiO2 gel or sand. Operating temperature and pressure are respectively 315°-360° and 21-56 atm. Preferred products are C4 hydrocarbons and the corresponding alcohols.
