2072. LORENZ, L. (Badische Anilin- u. Soda-Fabrik). [Purification and Separation of the Alcohols Belonging to the Isobutyl Series and Obtained by the Hydrogenation of Carbon Monoxide.] German Patent 801,988, Jan. 29, 1951, appl. filed Oct. 2, 1948 (Cl. 12 o-5.02). Chem Zentralb., 1951, II, p. 1060; Chem. Abs., vol. 45, 1951, p. 5175.

Hydrogenation products of CO or their fractions containing alcohols are converted into vinyl ethers, these are fractionally distilled and the pure fractions saponified. The main fraction of a technical isobutyl alcohol boiling within 1° (HO number 26.5, ketone number 2.4) is vinylated with C2H2 after addition of 2% Na. The vinyl mixture yields on fractional distillation 90% of a fraction (I) (b. 82°-83°) and a residue, which on further distillation yields in addition to higher boiling residues a fraction (II) (b. 92°-93°). (I), saponified by warming with H2O with addition of 0.5% H2SO4. The distillation yields pure iso-BuOH, b. 107°, HO number 26.8-27, ketone number 0, output about 90%. Similarly, (II) gives pure see-AmOH, b. 113°, HO number 22.6-22.7, ketone number 0.
