Process for the preparation of acids, such as propionic acid and their esters, involves treating CO in the presence of a volatile catalyst containing B and F atoms, such as BF3, with a saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol, such as EtOH, containing at least 2 C atoms or compounds which give such alcohols upon hydrolysis.
