Process for the preparation of aliphatic carboxylic acids such as propionic acid from a hydrating agent such as H2O, CO and an olefin such as C2H4 is carried out in the presence of an added condensing agent containing BF3 and not more than 5-mol. proportions of H2O (suitably 1-3 mols.). Gives several examples with details.
