2066. LODER, D. J. (E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.). Organic Acid Synthesis. United States Patent 2,135,451, Nov. 1, 1938; appl. filed July 13, 1935, Serial No. 31,208; 20 claims (Cl. 260-532). Chem. Abs., vol. 33, 1939, p. 995.

In reactions such as the production of HOAc or propionic acid, an alcohol such as MeOH or EtOH is treated with CO in the presence of BF3, at temperatures of 180°-240° and under pressures of 350-700 atm. By a similar treatment, polycarboxylic acids are formed from polydroxy alcohols such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, and the like.
