For the production of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid such as propionic acid, an olefin such as C2H4 is reacted with H2O and CO (suitably at a temperature of about 325° and under a pressure of about 700 atm.) in the substantial absence of O2 in a vessel, the inner surfaces of which are lined with a metal containing at least 95% Cu.
