Gaseous mixture containing H₂ and an oxide of C is subjected at an elevated temperature and pressure (suitably 250°-400° and 900 atm.) to the action of a catalyst comprising the reduction product of a fused mixture containing 1-5% of an oxide of Cr, V, Zr, Al, Mg, Ti, Th, Si, or Ce and about 95-97% of Cu oxide and Mn oxide (the Cu oxide being excess).
