1986. LAMB, S. A. (Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd.). Production of Aldehydes From Olefins. British Patent 667,093, Jan. 31, 1949. British Abs., 1952, B II, p. 584; Chem. Abs., vol. 47, 1953, p. 5426.

Aldehydes may be obtained in improved yields from a mixture of olefins containing C2H4 by decreasing the C2H4 content in the mixture to < 5% by distillation before carbonylation and treating the resulting mixture with CO and H2 (1:3) at 100°-180° and 200-300 atm. in the liquid phase and in presence of a catalyst, which is a Co salt of an organic carboxylic acid (Co naphthenate or acetate) dissolved in the liquid. Thus, 2:2:4-trimethylpent-3-ene freed from C2H4 by distillation and containing Co naphthenate (0.1% Co) is fed at 100 cc per hr. together with H2-CO (3:1) mixture at 200 l. peh hr. into a Cu-lined converter of 1-l. capacity at 145° and 250 atm. A product is obtained containing 10 wt. % of CO group, corresponding to nonyl aldehyde (50%).
