Method of producing oily hydrocarbons from a mixture of CO and H2 under normal, higher, or reduced pressure consists in passing a gas containing CO and H2 in a proportion other than 1:2 over an Fe catalyst, eliminating the oily hydrocarbons, mixing the gas with CO and H2 in such a proportion that the ratio CO:H2 in the mixture is 1:2, and passing the mixture over Ni or Co catalyst.
