Iron catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO are made by precipitating Fe salt solutions with earth alkali carbonates or hydroxides. If desired substitution of these precipitating agents can be made by alkali if the washed-out precipitate is later treated with earth-alkali compounds, particularly barium nitrate solutions.
