Metal of the Fe group, such as Fe, Co, or Al or the oxide of such a metal, is treated with steam and H2 at a high temperature (suitably about 800°-1,200°) with use of about 5-50% H2 in the treating mixture, and the resulting oxidic material is reduced, as by H2 at 650°. Gives several examples with details.
