The preheated parent material is injected into a stream of superheated steam or gas. The injected pitch and tar remain in contact with the steam or gas for a fraction of a second only, traveling with it approximately 20 cm. The temperature of the steam or gas is such that the nonvolatile components do not decompose. After leaving the apparatus the mixture is cooled.
