Reaction between CO and H2 is effected in the presence of catalysts favoring only the production of formaldehyde and the formaldehyde thus produced, without separation from the gas stream and in a separate stage, is caused to react further with H2 in the presence of mild reduction catalysts and oxidation catalysts with the reduction catalysts in such excess as to favor only the production of MeOH.
