Diatomaceous earth is leached with a dilute acid, such as HNO2 or HCl, washed, dried, and calcined at 500° -550° . The usual Co and Th catalysts are then supported on this earth, an increase in liquid hydrocarbons being obtained from the CO-H2 reaction.
