Conversion of CO and H2 into hydrocarbons with more than 1 C atom in the molecule is effected in presence of catalysts, which contain Co together with 0.2-8%, calculated with reference to the Co, of Ag as such or in form of a compounds.  The catalysts are subjected, before use, to a treatment with reducing gases at a temperature not exceeding 250°.
