1663. ------. [INTERNATIONAL HYDROCARBON SYNTHESIS CO.] [High-Molecular Paraffins From Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen.] Italian Patent 378,208, Aug. 24, 1939. Chem. Zentralb., 1942, I, p. 2843.

Catalysts are used in the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2, which were obtained by precipitation from compounds of the Fe group on alumina and finally reduced. These catalysts can be activated by additions of the oxides of Zn, Th, Mn in amounts up to 20%. Example: The catalyst is obtained by precipitation from Co- or Zn-nitrate as the carbonate on alumina. Gas is passed over it at 180° consisting of Co: H2 = 1:2 with 15% of inerts. 146 gm. of hydrocarbons are obtained per m.3 of gas. At 1 atm. 76% paraffin is obtained, 92% at 6 atm. and almost wholly paraffin at 10 atm. It is 70% soluble in benzol, m. p. 83° , 11% in toluol, m. p. 100° , and 13% in xylol, m. p. 108° , the insoluble residue m. p. 138° .
