            Small pieces of Fe having 2 dimensions above 1-2 mm., preferably about 5 mm., and the 3d dimension 0.1 mm. are heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at 700º-800º and then heated at 500º in a reducing atmosphere.  This material is an approved catalyst for hydrogenation of CO.  Halides, phosphates, and borates of Na, Li, K, or Cs (0.1-10%), Al2O3, SiO2, compounds of Cu, Ti, Mn, W, Mo, Cr, Th, etc. may be added.
