            Catalysts for the production of CH3OH and other alcohols are prepared by heating a mixture of basic Zn and Cr carbonates.  The mixture may be obtained by precipitation of a solution of Zn and Cr salts.  The catalyst is preferably used as pellets.  If alkali salts are present in the catalyst, they are useful for producing higher alcohols.
