            Describes stuffing-box packing for the plunger and piston rods of high-pressure pumps.  Each packing element consists of 2 rings, or especially for the 1 which touches the piston rod or the plunger is of such porosity that a satisfactory lubrication and cooling of the sliding surfaces is attained by means of the material being pumped.  Suitable woods for the purpose are acacia, maple, or elm.  The wooden rings are subjected to pretreatment with liquids at normal or raised temperature, preferably under pressure, vacuum, or both.
