            Volatile hydrocarbons formed by the catalytic reaction of H₂ and CO are rendered stable to spontaneous combustion by treating them at high temperature with agents having a condensing action, such as decolorizing earth impregnated with H₃PO₄, AlCL₃, ZnCl₂, SnCl₂, or B fluoride.
