            In separating high-molecular alcohols b. 200º-320º admixed with hydrocarbons, the mixture is 1st dissolved in a liquid solvent such as pentane and then allowed to flow over silica gel, which adsorbs the alcohols.  The pentane is distilled to recover the hydrocarbons and the silica gel is extracted with MeOH to obtain the alcohols.
