      1557.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE, A. G.]  [Separating the Unsaponifiable Components From Sulfochlorinated Mixtures.]  French Patent 52,734.  May 17, 1945: appl. filed Jan. 26, 1943. in Germany Jan. 3. 1942: addition to French Patent 879,513.  Chem. Zentralb., 1949. II. E. p. 90.

The method of the main patent, wherein liquid SO2 is used to separate the unsaponifiable constituents, is improved by the subsequent or simultaneous application of a volatile or liquid hydrocarbon.  Example: A hydrocarbon b. 240º-360º obtained by the hydrogenation of CO is sulfochlorinated.  The product contains 4.5% of hydrolysable Cl.  After adding about 3.7 times amount of liquid SO2, stratification takes place.  The lower layer after evaporation of the SO2 contains 12.5% of saponifiable and 5.7% of unsaponifiable constituents.  After renewed treatment with 1.5 times the amount of liquid butane at -20º and subsequent stratification, the lower layer contains a product with only 0.8% unsaponifiables and 14.9% of hydrolysable Cl.
