            Unsaturated fatty acids are produced, for example, from the primary alcohols obtained by oxidation of paraffins from the conversion of CO with H₂, by the conversion of halogenated fatty acids with alkaline agents at raised temperature and pressure.  The operation is carried out in the presence of liquid H₂O instead of, as previously used, only that amount that would remain in the vapor form under the pressure used.  The product is suitable as a substitute for oleic acid in soap manufacture or for the production of softeners, lacquers, dye bases.
