            Ethers or esters derived from alcohols with at least 2 C atoms, such as diethylether, tetrahydrofuran, also lactones such as butyrolactone, are reacted with CO and H2 at raised pressure and temperature (100-250 atm. and 100º-250º) in presence of metals of group 8 or other carbonyl-forming metals or their compounds on kieselguhr or the like with activators such as compounds of Mn, Th, Zn, or Cu.  The products thus obtained are hydrogenated.
