Gas mixtures containing CO and H2 are passed at raised temperatures and at any pressure over catalysts consisting wholly or partly of metal sulfides.  Example: Water gas at about 20 atm. pressure is passed through an Al-lined pressure vessel at 270º over a catalyst of CoS.  A petroleumlike oil is obtained by cooling the exit gases.
