In a process for the production of hydrocarbons with >1 C atom in the molecule from CO and H₂ in a converter in which the heat of conversion with maintenance of a constant or nearly constant temperature is conducted through the walls of the converter into a cooling liquid, the gases leaving the converter are recirculated in an amount several times that of the entering fresh gas without removal of the conversion products and without intermediate cooling.
