      1425.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE, A. G.]  [Process for Producing Ethers.]  German Patent Appl. -. OZ 13,969. filed Feb. 1. 1943. TOM Reel 17, item 32, frames 911-915.

Ethers are produced by reacting organic hydroxyl compounds with compounds of organic hydroxyl compounds and metals whose hydroxides do not form alkaline solutions with H2O.  Example: An Al alcoholate, obtained by the reaction of 5. 5-dimethyl-3- methylhexanol-1 with Al. is caused to react with the like alcohol.  1,000 parts of the alcoholate are used with 950 parts of the pure alcohol.  The liquid alcoholate is miseible with the alcohol.  The liquid mixture is heated for 12 hr. under pressure to 320º.  After cooling the mixture is treated with HCl, and the oily layer is washed with H2O, dried, and distilled under reduced pressure.  870 parts of ether, or 50% of the calculated amount, are obtained.  It b. 290º-300º.  The O content is 5.5%.  Besides ether, 410 parts of olefins with 9 C atoms and 90 parts with 18 C atoms are obtained.  The remainder, 450 parts, consists of unchanged raw alcohol, which can be returned to the process.  By heating Al alcoholate, made from Synol and Oxo alcohols C6-C18, with the same free alcohol, the corresponding ethers can be obtained in relatively good yield.
