            Alphatic and cycloaliphatic nitrohydrocarbons are produced by treating aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons with N2O4 without the addition of H2O and at increased temperature and pressure.  The reaction is carried out in homogeneous liquid phase.  Suitable raw materials are hexane, isooctane, cyclopentane, decahydronaphthalene and  mixed saturated aliphatic and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons.  The raw materials may be obtained through the hydrogentaion of CO or through the hydrogenation of brown or bituminous coal, or from aromatic-free petroleum oils.
