            CO and H2 are caused to react with MeOH or dimethylether at a temperature <200º and under increased pressure, preferably at 150-300 atm., in the presence of catalysts consisting of metals of group 8 or their compounds capable of forming carbonyls.  The CO:H2 ratio can vary in wide limits.  Conversion may take place either in the gas or liquid phase.
