      1417. ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE, A. G.]  [Process for Obtaining Synthesis Gas From Hydrocarbons.]  German Patent Appl. - .filed June 13, 1940.  TOM Reel 26. item 11. frames 592-595.  Meyer Transl.  PC-S-II.  Fischer-Tropsch. vol. 1. chap. 66. 1948. p. 169.

In obtaining synthesis gas from hydrocarbons by their incomplete combustion with air or O2, if desired in the presence of steam and solid catalysts, a catalyst in vapor form is used consisting of a saturated vapor of a metal of the Fe group.  Example: 176 m.3 of a S-containing manufactured gas were reacted with 40 m.3 of O2 and steam in a reactor filled with a Ni-Mg catalyst.  At the entrance to the reactor were added per hr. 4 gm. Fe in the form of Fe carbonyl.  At a temperature of 990º at the outlet of the reactor, a gas mixture was obtained composed essentially of CO+H2 with only 0.25% of CH4.  There was not stoppage owing to C deposition with these quantities of Fe, O2, and steam.
