            Paraffin with or without olefins is treated with a H halide at temperatures >500º to give a mixture of the paraffin and an increased amount of olefin.  Butane (500 gm.) mixed with 1500 gm. dry HCL is passed each hr. through a steel tube. 2 m. x 60 mm. dimensions heated at 650º.  Washing and freezing gives 80% butane and 20% butylenes.
