Owing to sudden or even extreme fluctuations in the gas flow to the catalyst, the undesired presence of S in the feed, or sudden changes in operating temperature, the activity of the catalyst is curtailed by stoppage of the pores with soot or by decomposition of the body of the catalyst itself.  It is suggested in this connection that normal operation be maintained installation of sensitive electrically operated devices, which would correct automatically any undesired changes in operating conditions.
