      1401.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE, A. G.]  [Preparation of Waxy Substances.]  German Patent Appl. I 75,540.  OZ 14,316. filed July 17, 1943 (Cl. IV d-12 o).  FIAT Reel 170, frames 9,296-9,298: PB 25,614; Meyers Transl.  PC-S-IV, Wax Oxidation, vol. 3, chap. 36, 1949, p. 11.

Process covered by German Patent Appl. I 74,553 (abs. 1400) for the preparation of waxy substances is improved by making use of all or part of the initial materials without removal of the hydrocarbons accompanying them.  Example: 1,000 parts of a mixture of hydrocarbons m. 100º obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of CO is oxidized by air at 115º after addition of 0.15% KmnO, to an acid number of 45.  The fraction (800 parts) b. >240º under 1 mm. pressure is distilled with addition of small amounts of steam from the oxidation product.  ½ of this fraction is treated with H2 under pressure with reduction of the acids to alcohols.  The product is esterfied with the nonhydrogenated fatty acid-containing fraction with the addition of 80 parts of toluene by heating for several hr. at 120º and driving off the toluene, which entrains the H2O formed.  The waxy material with a yield of 792 parts has a drop point of 95º.
