      1399.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE, A. G.]  [Preparation of Sulfuric Acid Esters.]  German Patent Appl. I 76,953.  OZ 14,635, filed Mar. 4, 1944 (Cl. IV d-12 6).  Fiat Reel 171, frame 10,027: PB 25,615: Meyer Transl. PC-S-IV.  Wax Oxidation. Vol. 3. chap. 41. 1949. p. 19.

In preparing H2SO4 esters, the residue resulting from the steam distillation of fatty acid mixtures obtained by the oxidation of higher molecular weight aliphatic hydrocarbons is treated with sulfonating agents after first being hydrogenated.  By this means the so-called residues are converted into compounds containing hydoxyl groups, which are easily sulfonated.  The alkali salts of the esters are suitable as plasticizers for rayon and artificial silk.
