      1392.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE, A. G.]  [Preparation of Drying Oils.]  German Patent Appl. I 78,618, OZ 14,954, filed Sept. 18, 1944 (Cl. IV d-12 6).  FIAT Reel 171, frames 10,826-10,827: PB 25,615: Meyer Transl. PC-S-IV, Wax Oxidation, vol. 3, chap. 45. 1949, p. 26.

Drying oils are prepared by heating to 300º-390º the residues obtained by distillation up to 280º under 1-10 mm. pressure of fatty acid mixtures obtained by the oxidation of nonaromatic hydrocarbons.  Suitable initial materials for the process are the distillation residues of fatty acid mixtures resulting from the oxidation of high molecular weight paraffins such as are obtained in the processing of lignites and petroleum or their hydrogenation.  The resulting oils are readily soluble in the usual lacquer solvents and on evaporation of the solvent give a drying, very glossy coating.
