      1372.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE, A. G.]  [Oxidation Products With Excellent Emulsifying Properties.]  German Patent Appl. I 67,977, OZ 12,379, filed Oct. 4, 1940 (Cl. IV d-12 6).  FIAT Reel 164, frames 2,688-2,671; PB 25,608; Meyer Transl. PC-S-IV, Wax Oxidation, vol. 3, chap. 50, 1949, p. 37.

In preparing oxidation products with excellent emulsifying properties, hydrocarbons of very high molecular weight, resulting from the hydrogenation of the oxides of C, are partly oxidized up to an acid number that is appreciably lower than the number calculated from the assumption of only 1 carboxyl group for each average molecule of the raw material.  Example: 250 kg. Of a mixture of high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, m. 98º and obtained by the hydrogenation of CO, is melted and introduced with 0.25 kg. KmnO4 in a 5% aqueous solution into a tube provided with a gas distributing device.  An air stream of 400 m.3 per hr. is passed through the tube at 140º for 2 hr. giving a product with an acid number of 30.  It is allowed to cool to about 100º and neutralized with potash.  The product thus obtained has an excellent emulsifying property, especially for high-molecular-weight synthetic hydrocarbons.
