N₂-free synthesis gas of uniform composition can be produced in a blast furnace or other metallurgical smelting furnace by the use of O₂and other gasifying agents such as steam by preheating these gases together in a regenerator to 700º-1,400º, whereby the amount of O₂ during the preheating period is increased in about the same degree as the temperature of the regenerator decreases. The additional amount of O₂ necessary for equalizing the temperature change in the regenerator is about 5-10% of the total amount of O₂ used.
