      1338.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE, A. G.]  [Metahnol.]  French Patent 652,898, Apr. 16, 1928.  Chem. Abs., vol. 23, 1929, p. 3716.

MeOH is produced from CO and H2 at 100º-250º using catalysts having a basis of particularly active Cu.  The Cu may contain oxides of metals from the 2d to the 7th group of the periodic system, precipitated from aqueous solutions of salts of the metals.  In an example. A mixture of CuO and MgO obtained by the precipitation at 20º of 2 mols. of Cu(NO3)2 and 1 mol. of Mg(NO3)2 by dilute aqueous NaOH, with washing and drying up to 250º, is reduced for 30 hr. by a mixture of N2 and H2 containing 5% of H2 at 100º-250º.  If a mixture of CO and H2 containing 33% H2 is directed on to this catalyst at 150º, a good yield of MeOH is obtained containing only traces of compounds reacting with Br.
