            Liquid hydrocarbons are prepared by polymerizing gaseous olefins using catalysts of the Friedel-Crafts type, using gases that contain more than 30%, preferably 40%, of gaseous olefins and in which the olefins are composed for the greater part of butylenes and/or amylenes, and subjecting the products to a hydrogenation and a treatment with superheated steam in the presence of caustic alkalies.
