            Gaseous hydrocarbons such as CH4 or gas mixtures containing it, other than coke oven gases or other gases containing liquid hydrocarbons, are passed with H2O vapor and, if desired, with further addition of air or O2, through a water gas producer in which coke or other carbonaceous fuel is undergoing gasification, which is carried out without addition of CO2, the coke having a temperature of at least 800º-1,000º.  As starting material a natural gas or waste gases from NH3 synthesis, hydrogenation of coal, and cracking may be used.  Describes various details and modifications of procedure.
