      1288.  ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE A. G.]  Hydrocarbons and Their Oxygen-Containing Derivatives.  British Patent 474,448, Oct. 26, 1937.  Chem. Abs., vol. 32, 1938, p. 3416.

In the thermal conversion of CO and H2 into hydrocarbons having more than 1 C atom and/or their O-containing derivatives, the catalyst is prepared by adding to a previously precipitated reducible compound of a metal of the Fe group a compound of another metal that on heating yields an oxide not reducible by H2<900º, and subsequently heating the mixture in a reducing gas to >500º so that a partial sintering of the catalyst takes place.  The nonreducible ingredient may be a compound of an earth metal, for example, Al, Be, Mn, Zn, Th, Ce, or Zr.  It may be added as a precipitate or an aqueous dispersion or solution, which last may be precipitated after admixture with the Fe metal compound.  A 3d component, which is a compound forming a reducible metal oxide, for example Cu(NO3)2, may be incorporated in the mixture.  In an example, moist precipitated Fe(OH)3, is mixed with a suspensic of Al(OH)3, dried and reduced in H2 at 850º.
