Compounds relatively poor in H, for example, aromatic hydrocarbons, are obtained from compounds containing a higher content of H, for example, aliphatic hydrocarbons, by heating these, preferably at 350º-500º, in presence of mixtures of Al with a smaller proportion of a metal of group 6 or mixtures of compounds of these metals. A mixture of Al₂O₃ and Cr₂O₆, obtained by mixing ordinary hydrated alumina with H₂O-soluble Al₂O₃, heating to obtain active Al₂O₃, impregnating with chromic acid solution, drying and heating to 450º, may be used as catalyst for obtaining aromatic hydrocarbons from heptane. A mixture of Al₂O₃ and MoO₃ also may be used as catalyst.
