      1233. ------.  [I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE A. G.]  [Ethyl Alcohol.]  French Patent 660,678, May 29, 1928.  Chem. Abs., vol. 24, 1930, p. 130.

EtOH and other organic compounds are prepared by treating oxides of C and H2 or hydrocarbons rich in H or both in the presence of catalysts containing elements of the 8th group of the periodic system, alone or mixed with other elements, at <320° and under pressure >20 atm.  The content of oxides of C in the gaseous mixture is <25% of the H2 or hydrocarbons present.  When catalysts are used containing Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, or their mixtures or alloys, temperatures >320° may be used in the presence of supports that are poor heat conductors and using gaseous mixtures in which the contents of H2 or hydrocarbons is greater than that of oxides of C.
