            The S content of gases containing H2S in excess of 7 gm. S per m.3 is reduced before desulfurization by catalytic oxidation with active C by (1) dilution with gases free from or low in S. or (2) carrying out the oxidation in stages, the necessary amount of air being added before each stage.  Alternatively all the O2 needed may be added in 1 stage, the gas being cooled and moistened between stages.
